Queen Mary Hospital is one of the major regional acute public hospitals under the Hospital Authority. It is also the teaching hospital of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong. Apart from general public wards, QMH also provides private ward facilities. The main private wards are situated on the 21st floor of Block K. There are other private ward facilities attached to the specialty wards.

Private accommodation consists of single-bed (1st class) and 2-bed (2nd class) rooms. All rooms have attached bath and toilet and are equipped with facilities including telephone, television, electric beds, etc.
Admission
Elective Admissions
Admission to the Private Wards of Queen Mary Hospital is through QMH doctors who are eligible for private practice. Please consult your attending doctor at the clinic or ward. Advance booking is required. Please admit as scheduled.
Emergency Admissions
These could be arranged through the Accident & Emergency Department depending on availability.
Transfer from General Wards
Patients who stay in the general wards can request a transfer to a private ward through an application. Due to high demand, patients may have to wait for the available bed.
Deposits and Payment
Deposits
A deposit is collected at the time of admission. Payment may be made by cash, bank draft, EPS or credit card. (Please refer to the hospital charging policy for more details)

Billing and Refund of Deposit
The Account Office will prepare interim bills during hospitalization and a final bill after discharge for private patients. Bills must be settled within 60 days. An administrative charge will apply to overdue bills. Any remaining deposit will be refunded by the Finance Department. Please refer to the hospital charging policy for more details.

Reminders on Admission
Please bring along:
- Hong Kong Identity Card or Passport
- Hong Kong Birth Certificate for patient under 11 years old
- Personal Toiletries such as tooth brush, face towel, etc.
- A set of your own clothes or you can use our hospital attire
- A pair of comfortable non-slip walking shoes
Please do not bring excessive money or valuables to the hospital. The hospital is not responsible for any loss.
Reminders for Civil Servants, HA staff of dependents
- Please bring along the required documents, e.g. guarantee letter, etc. for the entitled medical benefit
- Extra charges will be levied if you wish to choose your own attending doctor, or move to a higher class of accommodation. Please contact the nurse in-charge or account office for details.
Medical Services
Doctors
Doctors providing private patient services include professors from the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong, and HA specialists approved by the Hospital. Resident doctors are also available to provide basic medical care. Private patients can choose doctors of their own preference during hospitalization. Please contact the ward nurse for more details.
Nurses
Each “Named Nurse” is responsible for conducting assessments and implementing the nursing care plan for a designated group of patients in the private ward. Patients can hire private nurses or helpers at their own expense if needed. The Hospital can arrange for supervision of these services. For more details, please contact the ward in-charge.
Allied Health Professionals
They include pharmacists, clinical psychologists, dieticians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, prosthetics and orthotists, podiatrists and speech therapists. After receiving referral from doctor, they will conduct individual assessment, design appropriate treatment plan, provide professional advice, teach special techniques or use tools to help patient to achieve the maximal rehabilitation potential.
Community Nursing Service
This service provides domiciliary nursing care for patients through home visits and facilitates rehabilitation in the patient’s home environment. Please contact the ward nurse for more details.
Pharmaceutical Care Services
Our Pharmacy Department provides 24-hour pharmaceutical care services.
Private patients can pay for and collect their medications from the Pharmacy Department upon discharge. Please contact our Clinical Pharmacist if the patient requires drug counselling services.

- Daily from 8am to 8pm.
- Please adhere to the instructions of the nursing staff and the hospital’s infection control measures.
Follow-Up Appointment
- Discharged private patients will have follow-up appointments in the dedicated private clinics
- The ward staff will assist in arranging the follow-up time and date

- A sick leave certificate will be issued upon request

Facilities and Services
Accompanying Persons
Beds can be arranged for the accompanying person in single rooms (1st class) only, at a fee. Please make a request through the nurse in-charge.
Nursing Mothers
This is for parents accompanying a sick baby or child under three years old, and a fee will apply. Please contact the ward nurse in-charge.
Meal / Food Services
Our catering service provide daily breakfast, hot lunch and dinner, along with beverages and snacks as supplements. These meals are planned by our catering manager and include choices of Chinese, European, vegetarian, and Muslim food. Special orders, such as individual preferences or for religious purposes, will be accommodated. Please inform the ward staff in advance to make arrangements.
