Surgery
The Department of Surgery was one of the founding departments of Queen Mary Hospital, under the headship of Professor KH Digby. The department only had 2 surgical wards at that time and patients frequently overflowed to other wards and the corridors. Today, the department enjoys worldwide reputation for excellence, caring for about 38,000 inpatients and 145,000 outpatients a year.
Our Vision
Clinical care of the patient always comes first at our department, as evidenced by regular professorial and consultant rounds. “Census meeting”, where all complications and post-operative deaths are discussed, have been held weekly since the 1950s. The Census meeting is a proud tradition of the department to ensure patient safety and quality assurance, and also an invaluable learning opportunity for trainees and medical students. Our department also holds regular Research meetings, pathology meetings, Journal reviews, Service Rounds, Grand Rounds.
